Reading Skills for Today's Adults - Helpful Hints
Screen Resolution
The Reading Skills pages are optimized for 800 x 600.
Some pages may not contain the entire story without having to scroll. If
you use a larger screen resolution like 1026 x 768, you can click on the
Maximize button to enlarge the window and then scrolling will not be
necessary. Here is a keyboard shortcut to maximize a window:
Press Alt+Space Bar - then press the X key. The window will
maximize.
Text Size
In Internet Explorer, you can adjust the text size in a webpage. If
you click on the View Menu and select Text Size, you will see 5
choices of text size. The Reading Skills stories have been optimized for
Medium text size. Be sure you set your preference to Medium (View
Menu, Text Size, Medium). If you use a larger text size (larger or
largest) the word numbering along the left column will get skewed and not
give you the correct number or words read.
Scrolling
If you need to scroll, you can use the down and up
arrows. You can also use the Space Bar to scroll downward.
If you have a wheel on your mouse, you may turn the wheel to scroll
up and down.
Moving Backward
You can press the Backspace key to go to previous windows.
You can use the Alt+Left Arrow to move to previous windows and
Alt+Right Arrow to move forward to windows you have already viewed.
Printing
You can print any page by selecting Print from the File Menu or by pressing
Ctrl-P.
Closing a Window
You can close a window by clicking on the Close Box (the Red X in the
upper right hand corner) or by pressing Ctrl+W.
Connection Speed
Depending on the speed of your internet connection, the reading sound files will
begin playing in 1 - 2 seconds to several seconds. If you have dial-up, it
may take 30 to 60 seconds for the sound file to begin.
